Global Rapid Rugby CEO Mark Evans has announced the immediate suspension of the 2020 season.
Travel, quarantine and public health restrictions have made it logistically impossible to run the competition through the Asia-Pacific region.
Evans explained the timing of the suspension is for the imminent future.
“It’s enormously disappointing to have to bring the competition to a halt just one round into the season, however, the health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and fans has always been our number one priority.
“The sporting environment has been turned upside down by the current worldwide health crisis. We have always taken the advice of relevant health authorities, governments and rugby bodies in the Asia Pacific region and will continue to do so.
“The success of the opening round of Global Rapid Rugby Season One was outstanding, with three games featuring six teams played in Fiji and Perth. We proved that it can de done and look forward to producing more quality, entertaining rugby in the future.
“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the fans for their support of the competition and their teams. The passion and pride on display this year has been a pleasure to behold.”
